well some on here know that i like to make selfbows
i really enjoy it and find it almost therapeutic, helps relieve stress.
however over the last year i have only made 3 bows only 2 of which turned out
all because i found another primitive hobby that is just as challenging and rewarding
i have taken up the ancient art of rock knapping.
this in turn also led to primitive arrows and knives too
i have really grown my abilities with this in a short time,or atleast thats what elders in this have told me.
some have said that i am a naturla at it even,i dont like to hon my own horn or anything.
i just think that i have gotten where i am thru practice.
i spend on average of 2 hrs a night doing this, every night for 11 months.
i have gone thru over 100# of rock/obsidion.
i started with learning how to pressure flake slabs into heads and blades.
the last three months i have taken up percussion knapping.
well any how here are a few pics, let me know what ya think and what ya like
sorry the pics are so big, cant seem to make them small enough for this site

these are most of what i have made, there are approx 40 more points and atleast one knife
and a few arrows that i have traded off over the last 11 months
thanks for looking

                                                                 peace,
                                                                        tim

Tim, i resized your photos for you.

Great looking stuff! But you better bend some wood sooner or later before you forget how.

Looks like you need to start working on the DNR to allow stone points.

take care, Dan.

Dan thanks for resizing the pics, appreciate it.im not that computer literate.used to have my kids do that stuff for me.now they are copmuter geeks for the Navy.and yes i would love to be able to hunt with stone.i could go all primitive, bow, arrows, points, skinning knife, hell i would even get some buckskins to hunt in then

tim, thanks for the compliment and yup lost a lot with some of them.
i have some nice scars, one finger i cut so deep that knuckle still doesnt bend right or feel right.that was about 5 months ago.

oneye,thanks for the compliment

mjh your right,i dont do a whole lot of couch sitting.
dont care for much thats on the tube, atleast untill the news comeson at 10
after that i find an episode or two of family guy and call it a night.
if i am watching something on tv,i usually have something else i am doing to
like fletching a primtive arrow or two, seperating sinew etc.
i still need to make up some strips of raw hide and finish up my stone tomahawk.
all the straightend shafts i have need to have stone heads attached and fletched.
i have some longer stone blades that need handles fitted to them for dagger style knives
i did drag a stave into the house the other night too,got some more deer legs coming that need the toes and tendons removed
i still have 3 or 4 steel blades cut out that need scales put on and finished up.not to mention  about 9 or 10 turkey wings that are frozen and need the feathers removed from, the bones too for calls.
yup not much time for tv

when i get the arrows finished up i will be offering them for trade etc.
these will be what i call wall quality.not that they arent straight enough to shoot accuratly.
i just never spined the shafts and some may not be the highest quality of shaft(i.e. i may have heard a crack when straightening it,but nothing visible)
so if ya see something ya like just holler Grin

thanks

It is amazing to me how you get both sides of the knapped head so symetrical.  Great work,  Chad

Really nice looking stuff. I've always thought it would be cool to be able to go out into the woods and cut down a tree and make the bow, string and arrows with primitive tools, you're all set to do it. Kirk

Sounds like a fun road trip.  Go to P & Y museum then wood shopping.  Weird thing about me is when I buy something for myself nowadays it is usually bow wood.  I gotta get a life.

for me it's either archery related books, 3 rivers gift cards, or a new hand plane or something.

Sorry for resurrecting such an old thread (Dec 2009 - 2 1/2 years), but.. I just read the full regs from the MN DNR's website, and it says absolutely nothing about stone points. It only states that points must be 7/8" wide, and not to exceed 2" wide when using expandable broadheads (2" after impact, it says). and that they must be "...of a barbless design and function in a barbless manner."

Have I missed some regs I REALLY want to read, or has any reg against them been repealed?

Read them again.it clearly states. "All broadheads must have atleast two metal cutting edges"

I swear I read that 15 times. Now I see it. I don't know why, maybe I didn't want to see it - but I missed that entire paragraph.

What is the purpose of that reg? Why is it there?
